You can’t go shopping on 5th Avenue without immediately heading to SAKS 5th Avenue – after all, if it’s in the name, it’s got to be a staple, right? As you might expect, the flagship store is located 611 5th Avenue in New York.
Saks was founded by Andrew Saks in 1867, and was a New York staple as Saks & Company by 1902. It’s gone through several power changes throughout its extensive history, but remains one of the most well-noted and recognizable businesses throughout the world.
Because of its rich history, Saks 5th Avenue has been able to hold a lot of ‘firsts’ for the retail world, including the opportunity to be the first store in New York to actually have its own zip code. Although Saks has become a New York City landmark all on its own, Saks Off Fifth has become just as popular on an international level, with the company opening their first Canadian store in 2016.
Not only is it the oldest department store in North America (making it a huge tourist attraction and an historical fascination), but it still rolls out luxury brands, just like it was designed to do when Andrew Saks came up with the idea. It’s incredible to think that something that began in the 1800s could still appeal to today’s fashion standards, but Saks continues to pave the way for luxury fashion, accessories, and so much more. There’s no doubt it will always be the pride of the NYC shopping scene – and rightfully so!
